Release Notes:

“Here’s a song that finally you can understand,” sings
frontman Paul Smith as he opens ‘Quicken The Heart’. Maxïmo
Park want people to sit up and listen, and their third record
could be the one that people can’t escape from.

Angular guitars and sing-along melodies propelled them to
success, while Smith’s arresting lyrical twists (and
wonderfully oddball dance moves) ensured they weren’t lost in
the throng of imitators. ‘Quicken The Heart’ will fill floors
and minds, but things are darker than before. Opening track
‘Wraithlike’ talks of faded memories and lost love, and lead
single ‘The Kids Are Sick Again’ paints a despairing picture
of a time when nothing seems worthwhile. Musically, too,
there’s anger and gloom in the album.

Building on the post-punk influences that have served them so
well, the band sharpen their riffs with some Gang Of
Four-inspired manoeuvres and launch into a Joy Division
bassline on second track ‘The Penultimate Clinch’. Luckily
they haven’t lost their knack for writing an infectious tune,
and the album packs more punch than their previous
long-player, ‘Our Earthly Pleasures’.

Though they’ve confidently conquered the tricky third album,
Maxïmo Park haven’t really changed their formula since their
debut. If ‘Apply Some Pressure’ and ‘Graffiti’ didn’t do it
for you then there’s not a lot here that will change your
mind. But momentum is a useful thing, and there are always new
listeners waiting to be impressed. While their last album shot
to number two in the charts, they could now be poised to go
right to the top and become one of the summer’s essential
bands.

11. Damocles 3:36
12. Follow Me Into The Darkness 5:44

Release Notes:

The spectre of Busted has hung over Charlie Simpson and
Fightstar for five years, but with this ambitious,
accomplished and surprisingly moving third effort, the memory
of synchronised jumps, school uniforms and screaming hordes of
tweenie fans should be finally banished.

Because this is the record Charlie Simpson was born to make.
Fightstar's debut Grand Unification hinted at the cinematic
possibilities within Simpson and Westaway's harmonies and the
meaty rhythm section while the brutal riffs and maturity
evident in sophomore effort One Day Son, This Will All Be
Yours were let down by an unpalatable amount of filler.

But the only disappointment of note on Be Human comes at its
halfway point, with the Muse-esque stomp of The Whisperer
engaging but out of sync with the rest of this intense and
astral album. With Fightstar having released this LP
themselves and the aforementioned orchestra appearing on
almost every track, it's a 50-minute statement of intent, a
dozen songs in which the four-piece declare 'this is the band
we've always wanted to be'. From the opening, orchestral burst
of Calling On All Stations, the Death Cab-meets-Cure emotional
theatrics of Give Me the Sky and the mournful movie script
ending of Follow Me Into Darkness, immersing yourself in the
bipolar world of Be Human is an exhilarating, sometimes
heartstopping journey to revisit for years to come.

The singles are clear highlights and Abidi proves he's one of
the most talented stickmen in rock on Radio 1-playlisted smash
Mercury Summer - inspired by Andy Dufresne's dream of the
beach paradise Zihautanejo in the Shawshank Redemption. On the
hair-raising The English Way, Haigh's sleazy bassline rumbles
over angelic choirs, in a pounding example of Fightstar's
successful melding of choruses that scream 'radio friendly
unit shifter' with the intensity and passion beloved by the
faithful.

But it's in War Machine that the album's clean, crisp
production, grandiose intentions and dramatics are at their
most emotive - unsurprisingly, the influence of Vangelis'
Blade Runner soundtrack is still evident in its deathly
orchestral opening. It's a likeable enough effort but never
exceptional - until its exhilarating climax, that is. Battle
scene strings are married with a fist-aloft Simpson vocal and
a choir seemingly composed of thousands as an ethereal
conflict seems to explode from the speakers. As Milton's War
in Heaven is sonically recreated, a heartening realisation
surfaces - Fightstar's symphony isn't just unfinished;
greatness is within their reach.

Three decades after hip-hop first cracked the Top 40, white MCs remain, first
and foremost, a joke: fodder for sketch-comedy routines, YouTube parodies and
reality TV. Eminem is the exception that proves the rule, and he had to create
an outsize tragicomic persona ù the trailer-trash bane of Middle America ù to
justify his existence. In a culture saturated by hip-hop, shouldn't anyone be
able to spit rhymes without shame, apology or having to crack jokes about his
Star Wars action-figure collection?

Enter Asher Roth, a gangly redhead from the Philadelphia suburbs. Roth's tight,
witty debut lives up to the Internet hype that has swirled around him for
months. In the thudding "Lark on My Go-Kart," Roth calls himself a "dork" and
says he has "hair like a troll doll." But he keeps the nerd-boy self-deprecation
to a minimum and acts, you know, like a rapper: boasting nimbly (and often
hilariously) about getting girls ("Lion's Roar") and getting high ("Blunt
Cruisin'") over chipper beats by newcomer Oren Yoel. Roth's timbre and cadence
will remind listeners of Eminem, a subject he addresses head-on in "As I Em."
But he is his own man ù a blithe braggart, untroubled by the need to keep it
real. And that white rapper's albatross? He dismisses it with a couplet: "My
friends said, 'Homey, you know that you're white, dude'/I said, 'What, for real?
It's all good.'"
